Project Updates

Trailblazer has completed the majority of mainline fiber construction in our designated service areas. Service is available in most areas within the Estes Park town limits, north to Glen Haven, and along Highway 7 toward Allenspark. The final phase includes more rural and remote locations. These areas take more time, planning, and funding to complete. Many are farther from existing infrastructure. Others include difficult terrain, limited access, lower density, or special construction requirements.Trailblazer remains committed to completing the buildout for Estes Park Power & Communications customers. We also want to be transparent about the challenges. The remaining areas are some of the most complex and expensive locations in the project.

Why Construction Is Paused

Fiber construction is currently paused in several rural areas while Trailblazer and the Town of Estes Park evaluate funding options. Construction costs have increased significantly in recent years. Material, labor, permitting, and traffic control costs have all affected the final phase of the project. At the same time, the Town has worked to keep Trailblazer rates affordable for residents and businesses. Revenue continues to grow as more customers connect to the network. Trailblazer reinvests that revenue into operations and future construction. However, the remaining buildout still requires additional funding.

Funding and Next Steps

Trailblazer continues to pursue broadband funding opportunities for the remaining buildout areas. Many current funding programs focus on rural, high-cost locations and support efforts to bridge the digital divide. Grant processes take time and often move slowly. They also include eligibility rules that may affect which locations can receive funding. Some unbuilt locations may not qualify if other internet options already meet federal broadband reporting standards. Even with those challenges, completing the buildout remains a priority for Trailblazer and the Town of Estes Park. We will continue to pursue grants, evaluate local funding options, and reinvest available revenue into the project.

Staying Informed

Waiting for better internet service is never easy. We appreciate the patience of our rural community members and understand how important reliable broadband is.Trailblazer will continue to share updates as planning, funding, and construction options move forward. If your address does not yet have service available, please register your interest so we can keep you informed.

Location Updates

Trailblazer continues to review the remaining Phase 4 areas. Each area has different construction needs, access conditions, and funding requirements. The locations below summarize the major remaining buildout areas and the next steps for each.

Glen Haven

  • Service status: The majority of Glen Haven currently has Trailblazer service available.
  • Remaining area: A small section east of Old Bridge Road still needs additional fiber construction. This area includes a limited number of premises, but it remains part of Trailblazer’s long-term buildout plan.
  • Next steps: Trailblazer will evaluate this section for future construction as funding becomes available. We will continue to keep residents informed as planning and funding options move forward.

Allenspark

  • Service area: The rural Allenspark service area includes five sections. These locations extend from south of Estes Park along the broader Highway 7 corridor past the downtown Allenspark area.
  • Downtown Allenspark first: Downtown Allenspark will be the first section to open once the project resumes. This area is furthest along in the construction process. It also includes the highest concentration of commercial and community infrastructure locations.
  • Remaining sections: The other four Allenspark sections require full construction. These areas include some of the highest-cost and least-dense locations in the Trailblazer buildout.
  • Emergency communications: Trailblazer connected the Allenspark Volunteer Fire Station to support reliable communications and limited access to public WiFi in emergency situations.

Highway 34 Corridor

  • Highway 34 corridor service status: The Highway 34 corridor east of Mall Road includes homes along the river as well as locations closer to town. Areas closer to town generally have higher density, so that remains a consideration in future construction planning.
  • Infrastructure needs: This corridor needs more than new fiber construction. Trailblazer must also replace existing overhead conduit infrastructure that was installed after the flood. Wildlife damage, including damage from Northern Flickers, has affected multiple fiber runs.
  • Construction considerations: Work in this corridor requires significant planning, including coordination with CDOT for traffic control. Seasonal work windows also affect scheduling. Trailblazer will continue to evaluate this corridor as funding, permitting, and construction windows allow.

North of County Rd. 43 at Chasm Dr

  • Service area: A smaller area north of County Road 43 remains unavailable while Trailblazer reviews construction options and alternate fiber routes.
  • Infrastructure needs: Completing service to this area requires about one mile of mainline fiber. The route runs along County Road 43 near MacGregor Ranch and east past McCreery Lane.
  • Construction considerations: This area requires additional coordination with Larimer County. Special permitting and construction requirements add cost, time, and complexity. Trailblazer continues to review alternate paths and will move this area forward as funding and county requirements can be addressed.

Other Remaining Areas

  • Special conditions: Some remaining locations do not fit within the major areas listed above. These may include HOA access issues, unreachable premises, off-grid locations, custom construction needs, or other site-specific challenges.
  • Funding limitations: Some unbuilt locations may already have internet options that meet federal broadband speed standards. Those locations may not qualify for grant funding. Trailblazer may need to use other funding sources, including revenue reinvested into the project, to complete those connections.
  • Best next step: If you live in an unbuilt area and are an Estes Park Power & Communications customer, please contact Trailblazer. We can review your address and share the most accurate information available.
  • Ongoing commitment: The Town of Estes Park remains committed to completing the Trailblazer buildout to eligible Estes Park Power & Communications customers as quickly and responsibly as possible.
